Search engine optimization is usually called SEO in professional terms. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. If you have a website, then of course you want it to be found well in the Google and Bing search engines. You must therefore optimize your website for the search engines in order to score highly.
Which components fall under search engine optimization?
Unfortunately, many people do not understand what search engine optimization actually means. They soon think that it is about the ads at the top of the search results or the ads they see on other websites. Search engine optimization (SEO) and Search engine advertising (SEA) are 2 completely different things.
What is SEO?
Before we as SEO Agency start optimizing a website, we first do a website checkup. Not with 1 automatic tool like the many other agencies, but with more than 10 different tools + our own eyes.
This is so incredibly important that I always insist on this when someone starts talking about new content without looking at the technical side of the website.
Website analysis, website analysis, website analysis. I just can’t say enough.
One of our customers has grown from an average of 100-150 visitors within 1 year by 1000%. View our SEO case studies.
I usually make a comparison with a fast car when it comes to a good basis.
You can completely repaint a car (website design), put new rims under it (new content /content marketing), put photos in the newspaper (advertisements / backlinking), then it does not mean that your car is actually fast. Or let alone, really drives.
A car with a flat head gasket, broken spark plugs, empty tires, a leaking cooling system, and a gearbox that is done, you will not win the Google race. The same applies to websites.
Always start from the beginning. You are not going to build a house on sand or paint a boat with holes.
First, make sure that your website is put together properly.
A handle from the 150+ things that you have to look at in an SEO check.
- Does the website work well on mobile?
- Is the website fast enough?
- Are there unnecessary pages on the website?
- Are images used properly?
- Is there keyword cannibalization?
- Are there problems finding content on the website?
- Are all pages in the Google and Bing index?
- Are there indexation problems?
- Are conversions recorded?
- Does the SSL certificate work?
The content on your website (on-page SEO)
The content of your website is super important. But content is definitely not a king! You can also read that in 1 of our blogs. In the field of content for SEO, there is still a lot to tell. But I will keep it short.
What is important?
The correct layout of a page, with the right keywords in the right places. These keywords are also often referred to as SEO jargon. They form a coherent whole of the page that a search engine can understand. To know which keywords to use, you must do keyword research. Google is smart, but not very smart yet.
Google understands searches much better than before. So a question Google can now better understand and show the answer. For example, the question: who is the president of America. Google will then show information about the current president with their name and photo.
The most important parts for optimizing a page (with SEO content) for a search are the following:
- Meta Description
- Anchor texts (hyperlinks)
- Structured data such as Schema (JSON-LD)
- Images and Alt texts
If you have little content on your site yourself, you also have less chance of being found well. Expand your website so that people can find you on all keywords that are related to your company. This also requires keyword research.
The backlinks to your website (Off-page SEO)
Backlinks are references from one website to another. If you don’t know what backlinks are, check out our article about backlinks here.
Why are backlinks so important?
Every backlink to a website gives a value. In the past people mainly spoke about PageRank (named after Mr. Larry Page). Every webpage that is in the index of a search engine has a certain value. This value is built up by, for example, the number of links that refer to this page.
You have written a nice article about SEO. 5 people find the article interesting and make a reference (backlink) to your new article. This means that your article has earned 5 points. If your competitor has 4, then you can be higher in the search results.
Search engines are of course much more complex.
Not every backlink is equally valuable. And Google or Bing does not only look at the number of backlinks but also at the quality. In addition, they also look at the content of the page, the layout, and the technical aspects. All of these components receive a number of points. The more points you have, the higher you can get. Each part has more or less value. This depends on each keyword.
If you want to work with backlinks yourself, first start with all your social media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Your first links can be put on this. Then you can look at blogs or websites in your branch for which you might write a blog. This is called guest blogging. Here you can probably make a reference to your own website. In many cases, guest bloggers are linked with their name and sometimes company name at the bottom of the blog. This is also a form of link building.
Do you want to outsource link building?
Link building takes a lot of time to do well. I am not talking about start pages, pbn, and web2.0. For example, I have received backlinks without asking you. It is good to enter into partnerships so that you can automatically receive a link. Or secretly ask anyway …
Google My Business (GMB)
Without going too deeply into this, I want to say something about Google My Business.
If you want to be found better locally, use GMB. It is (still) free and helps a lot in finding local search results. If you want to know more about Google My Business, view our blog: What is Google My Business?
It is about optimizing your website to get higher on Google. The website must be well structured and use the right keywords in the right places. Finally, you want people to talk about you so that Google and Bing give your website more points than the competitor. So, scoring higher in Google starts with a good basis!
